The Nelson 151 Craft Beverage Trail
Virginia Route 151 is a scenic byway running through the communities below Wintergreen. Along the corridor you'll find wineries, breweries, cideries and distilleries, along with restaurants, farm markets and some spectacular Blue Ridge views.
Wineries Worth the Drive
Veritas Vineyards & Winery
One of the best-known wineries in the area and a classic Nelson County wine-country experience. Veritas combines estate vineyards, a polished tasting room and beautiful grounds at the foot of the Blue Ridge. It's an excellent choice if wine is the centerpiece of your afternoon.

Hazy Mountain Vineyards & Brewery
Come for the wine or beer, but don't overlook the setting. Hazy Mountain occupies a dramatic mountainside location and offers both a vineyard and brewery experience, making it especially convenient when everyone in your group doesn't want the same thing.

One of Virginia's earlier farm wineries, with vines dating to the late 1970s. Its elevated vineyard setting, estate-grown wines and Blue Ridge surroundings make it a relaxed stop at the northern end of the Nelson 151 corridor.

One of the closest major craft beverage destinations to Wintergreen and an easy choice when you want beer and a meal rather than a formal tasting itinerary. The sprawling Basecamp in Roseland combines house beers, food, outdoor space and a distinctly Blue Ridge atmosphere.

For something completely different, Wild Man Dan is a tiny Afton brewery specializing in small-batch beer and a personal, decidedly non-corporate brewery experience. It's a fun contrast to the larger destinations along the trail.

Nelson 151 isn't limited to grapes and grain. The area also has an established cider and spirits scene, and several of these stops are particularly convenient to Wintergreen.
Bold Rock Hard Cider in Nellysford offers an orchard-to-glass cider experience along the Rockfish River, while Blue Toad Hard Cider is a relaxed farm-based stop near the base of Wintergreen. Spirits fans can also explore local distilling at destinations including Silverback Distillery, Three Notch'd and Devils Backbone.

Wine & Views
Build an Afton wine-country afternoon around Veritas, Afton Mountain Vineyards and Hazy Mountain. There is no need to hit every stop. Two or three gives you time to actually enjoy the setting.
Beer & a Meal
Blue Mountain Brewery and Devils Backbone both work well when food is as important as what's on tap. Add Three Notch'd in Nellysford if you're making a longer afternoon of it.
Keep It Close to Wintergreen
Head down the mountain toward Nellysford and Roseland for an easy combination of Bold Rock, Blue Toad, Three Notch'd or Devils Backbone without committing to the full northern stretch of Route 151.
A Few Tips Before You Go
- Check hours before leaving. Tasting-room, kitchen and seasonal hours can change, particularly midweek and during the winter.
- Don't try to do everything. The best Nelson 151 afternoon is usually a few well-chosen stops rather than racing through the entire trail.
- Plan food into the day. Several breweries have kitchens, while food options at wineries can vary by day and season.
- Have a transportation plan. Route 151 is a rural, winding two-lane road. Choose a designated driver or arrange transportation if you'll be tasting at multiple locations.
- Download directions before you leave. Cell coverage can be inconsistent in parts of Nelson County and on the mountain.
